im going to big bend national park in texas this winter and id like to go on a canoe or float trip there, . the kind where just me and my buddy can go off by ourselves and we can do it on our own pace and have fun by ourselves with out a guide or a bunch of other people, also one that would last a couple days so we can camp out along the trip. how can we make that happen? we got no equipment, were enexperienced, not to much money cause were in college, and we would need somebody to pick us up at the end of the trip.
thanks

Notwithstanding the fact that u have no equipment, let me just say that it is a little foolish to want to do this knowing that u r inexperienced. I've been to Big Bend, & it is not exactly an easy place for someone to bail u out of any trouble u might get into. The Rio Grande is unpredictable in winter, which is flash flood season, & u have no idea what to look for or how to avoid getting swept away.

If u r absolutely convinced that u need to do this trip, u should contact some of the local outfitters (link below) for advice. I'd recommend Desert Sports, because they r one of the closest to the park & operate year-round. They r also well-qualified to come rescue ur a-s when u turn up missing, so you'd like for them to know what u look like before ur parents have to provide a recent photo.

You definitely do not want cheap equipment, because some of the canyons the RG runs through r narrow & the water will rage. Make sure u have ur stuff lashed securely so when ur boat overturns u wo not lose it all, & make sure it is in drybags so u do not spend the whole trip trying to dry stuff out. And make sure someone knows the details of ur trip, & that u check in with them ASAP before & after. Cell phone coverage is pretty spotty out there, & there r only three pay phones in the park that l remember, & even those r pretty remote.

Good luck!

There is a lot of info on the web . Keep in mind, if you have not paddled, and are not familiar with the area, AND are unwilling to bring someone along who is experienced, you're setting yourself up to have a crappy time. Rivers can be hard to read, and can take your trip from fun and relaxing to total sucky moto in a matter of seconds.
