Looking for an overnight hike with my 7 year old.Prefer a hike with a camping area withing 2 miles of the trail head. Some attraction at the campsite would be great -- a stream, lake, interesting rock formations, etc.Thanks.

l am sure you will find what you're looking for in Angeles National Forest. http://totalescape.com/active/campstuff/NF/angeles.html#lake
The Sheep Mountain Wilderness in that area is popular:

Here is a link to some trail descriptions (distance round trip): http://fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/recreation/hike-trails.shtml

You mean to tell me that there are still some canyons around Los Angeles that dont have all the snotty rich peoples houses in them?
That blows me away. If you really want a nice hike, drive out to palm Springs and hike Palm Canyon. l think you can go overnite there too.

Angeles national forest, off the 210frwy in azusa, is a good place. There is camping, rivers, lakes, etc. Not too sure about actual hiking trails, cuzz when we go, we climb the rocks, and follow the river. But it is a nice place to bring your child.
My 7yr old daughter loves it!
