Take a torch or portable light, your own pillows and warm clothes for the evening.

l also take a double blow up mattress and my own quilt. l get claustrophobic in sleeping bags!

Bring rain gear and if you do not use it your trip will be so fun. If it rains you will be miserable but glad you were able to stay dry. One more tip, only bring things that are disposable, plates, spoons and cups.

Toilet paper and plenty of beer. In fact, if you take loads of beer take some wet-wipes too, just in case?

If your any where near water, apply plenty of insect repellent, and keep all sexual activities inside the tent. Mosquito is will tear that a$$ up.

get someone else to put the tent up

take a mallet or hammer for the pegs
dont touch the ceiling part of the tent (rainproof)
dont keep food in the tent (rats)
dont worry about the noises you hear
enjoy it, you get a huge oxygen filled sleep

Do not let the guys take you hunting for Snooks at night. Do not ask them what a snook is or bring it up.

DO NOT GO!!!! no seriously be warned- never do fry ups when camping because you can not get the grease off the frying pan, you will need a roll mat because the ground gets freezing at night, you probabaly wo not be able to get a signal on your phone no matter where you stand and your hair will go frizzy because of the condensation on the inside walls of the tent first thing in the morning. other than that- have fun! x

Firstly.. enjoy and be open to the new experience.

Obviously you will have the basic equipment : tent, mat, sleeping bag, torch, cooking gear.

Light waterproof clothes, several cotton layers.

l really, really hope you're going with someone who is got experience camping. l live in the Pacific Northwest & it seems like every weekend we have some city folk get lost out in the woods.

It depends on where & how. Mountain camping is different than beach camping. Backpacking different from the all out sprawl of a regular camp. Campground or natural (ie, is there a restroom/outhouse?)

First Aid Kit, small fire extinguisher, bug repellent, LAYERED clothes, extra socks & shoes (especially if you're going fishing too), rain coat, drinking water, small shovel & bio friendly TP, cell phone (and if you're really out in the back of beyond something like a CB or long range radio is a good idea - u never know if u will need help), flash light & extra batteries (they always seem to die when u need them), rope, knife, hatchet, & a Field Guide.

EDIT: those r only suggestions to think about. the one time l forgot my knife, l needed it. a pocket sized (cargo pants) first aid kit is a really good idea. flashlight can be the keychain sized mag-lite.

Grab a copy of Camping for Dummies
http://amazon.com/Camping-Dummies-Michael-Hodgson/dp/076455221X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-1461026-9795217?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180013841&sr=1-1

Field Guide (Peterson is is a good series of guides) - learn something about the stuff around u - trees, birds, animals, & plants (what poison ivy, oak, sumac & stinging nettles look like).

TRASH BAGS! If u take it in, u pack it out. l (and a lot of other responsible campers) get tired of picking up other people is trash everytime l go out in the woods.

It rather depends on what u r going to do when u get there. Camping half way up Snowdon requires a different approach to pitching a tent outside a pub. Stay warm & stay dry. Take the best sleeping bag u can afford & (as importantly), something to put under it like an insulated foam mat. An air bed is comfy but heavy & awkward to carry. Warm clothing (and a change of it) is essential even at the height of summer & make sure u have waterproofs. A cheap cyclist is cape will fit the bill provided u do not see yourself hiking in the rain.

Depends where ur going. But u should take insect repellant, warm clothing (even if its warm weather), waterproof clothing (raincoat etc). A pillow is often a good idea too. And dont forget the toilet paper!

Rookie campers always bring too much stuff, in my experience.

Pack light & use ur clothes longer than u do at home..no one will care. Go natural & leave all ur cosmetics, beauty products & toiletries home. All u really need is a toothbrush & some natural soap & a light towel.

Oh yeah, ''Wipies''. Get the portable pack of disposable wet wipes.instant bath.

Check the weather & bring only the clothing & sleeping warmth & rain gear u need. Insect repellent if needed in the area.

Plan easy meals & plenty of snacks that require little preparation.

Most importantly, get ur head right. Getting out into nature should be a humbling, spiritual, refreshing & revitalizing experience. Take some quiet time for a nap in the woods.

One more suggestion: Get a small copy of the book 'Walden'
by Henry David Thoreau.

l work in camping shop most of advice is pretty sound you've been given, l would add take light layers that u can interchange depending on weather - avoid cotton yes it is light but it retains moisture. Insect repellant is a must as is torch & good bedding i.e. airbed sleeping bag or duvet.
The biggest thing the amount of times i've seen folk come in who r going away in 12,24,36 hrs & not checked tent is (a) in good condition & (b) waterproof - numerous get it checked!!!
