l hate to see that sort of stuff strewn around. As it is biodegradable there is no problem with burying it or even just placing it under a stone or bush but leaving it out in the open just spoils the natural environment for everyone else.
In some dry conditions stuff like orange peel can stick around for a long time before it rots & litter of any description just encourages others to drop litter as well.
There was a recent case in the UK where someone threw a banana skin into some bushes in a park & they were sucessfully prosecuted for littering even though they argued that it was biodegradable. The judge said that until it rotted it was still litter so, in effect, if u want to throw biodegradable litter then u must let it rot down first.
TAKE nothing but photographs KILL nothing but time LEAVE nothing but footprints

If it is the what you listed above, l see no problems with it.the stuff will eventually become part of the soil in just a few days and become kinda like mulch.
l do not like to see bottles, cans, plastic, etc.

The stuff that is biodegratable should be thrown on the ground. It is good for the soil and helps the environment.believe it or not. Every morning when l am going to school l throw my banana peeling or apple core out the window. It is not littering. It is HELPING!!! YAY!

Biodegradable so OK but they should throw them a few yards off the path so people do not have to see it. l throw apple cores, banana peels and peanut shells out of my car window when l drive by a wooded area. Better than filling up the land fill.

l dont mind disposing of biodegradable things like that, because they eventually turn into compost and make the plant life even healthier. but l do agree that it is not nice to look at, and can easily be put under a rock or log, or thrown deeply into the woods.

it sux, especially since most areas have trash cans in multiple places. Atleast it is not styrofoam or plastic. Something like an orange or banana peel will probably get picked up by and animal, but it still makes the area look like crap.

First of all, l do well to hike to my mailbox and back, so it is clearly not a question of what l do. However, the times l am vacationing and walking around sites of interest, it does not bother me in the least to see a stray orange rind or peanut shells. These things ARE biodegradable and give something back to the earth, so l think your friends are right. However, you think it is unsightly and should not be done, so no one is going to change your mind.

People should not leave ANYTHING on the trail. It is still litter even if it is biodegradable and if l am hiking behind someone who'd dumping their peanut shells on my trail l am yelling at them.
If you do not want to pack it out - then build a pit and bury biodegradable items, or burn them. But leaving them on the trail ruins the asthetic for everyone else who follows. It is selfish and childish.

If you do not want to carry the trash with you, you should bury it or burn it in a camp fire.

Not OK!
Always pack out what u pack in. It is just being considerate for other hikers - common courtesy. It does not matter if it is biodegradeable or not.
If u bring in food in tupperware, etc, when u close it up put ur trash in it. When l finish off a Nalgene, l will pack it with any other trash I've got (granola bar wrappers, etc.) & bring it back. You're not losing any space & you're still packing less weight heading out than what u brought in.

Sure it is biodegradable, however just throwing this stuff on the ground shows a definite lack of woodsmanship. Pack it in, pack it out. A true outdoorsman leaves no footprint on the land and tries to leave it more pristine than when he came! Why anyone would trash a place they go to for it is natural beauty is beyond me. Sounds like irresponsible lazy self absorbed idiocy to me!

Fruit pieces and such l do not mind - it is going to rot down anyway. It bothers me to see cans, plastic and especially cigarette butts though!!
However when we go hiking we bring a bag in and pack out whatever we brought in.

YEs, l agree it is somewhat unsightly but it does not stay that way for any length of time. Many wild animals and birds will eat orange peels and banana skins, and Peanut shells are hardly an eyesore. If you feel this strongly about something bio-degradable thats a food source, pick them up and but them in a refuse cobtainer when you get back from your hike.. I'd be am am a lot more concerned about people that throw trash ,bottles and cans on the trails

l completely agree with the person who said that people should not leave anything on the trail. l do not care what it is; l do not want to see it. Even if it is biodegradable, it is going to stay there for a while, longer than a few days. l want the trail to look as though no one has been there before me and l assume that other people want the same so l pack out any trash that l bring in.

if its biodegradable then its ok. that stuff adds nutrients to the soil and helps out the plants.

There is no excuse for leaving any foreign materials in the wilderness! Practice ''LNT''!!!! (Leave No Trace). Try and leave the woods as you have found them and if there is debris/garbage from a previous human, pick it up and pack it out!

If it is not biodegradable you must carry it to a garbage can - even if that means for several days. If it is biodegradable please do not just toss it around - bury it or at least place it under bushes where everyone else does not have to deal with it!

The rule is simple: If u packed it then u pack it out .The idiot excuse of ''Well it is biodegradable '' is bullspit. If the item does not bio-degrade 30 seconds after it hits the ground then its called garbage & the idiot that threw it should be fined for littering . l & many others put a lot of effort into practicing a '' leave no trace '' backcountry ethic l am sure the a lot of us have hiked out of the back country with 2-3 times the amount of trash that we hiked in with . If l sound a bit pissed , l am . l really do not like picking up other peoples trash .If it was not too heavy to carry in, then it is not too heavy to carry out

It may be biodegradable, but.if everyone does it the trail will look like a pig pen. Besides, in some areas (like above treeline) chemical & biological reactions r slow & it takes a LONG time for things to degrade. It is much better to pick up ur trash & bring it down to the trailhead & dispose of it properly. if u pack it in, u need to pack it out (including ur toilet paper).
There is a wilderness ethic called ''Leave No Trace'' that encourages people to impact the wilderness as little as possible when enjoying it.
