A buddy and l have a crazy Idea to go winter camping on my Uncle is farm NNE of Sundre in late February. My Uncle is an outfitter, so we can have all the gear we need. The problem is, that they've got a problem with voracious man-eating animals. That bear that ate that guy a few months ago by Sundre? Was caught on his farm. He is shot 3 wolves that were stalking his cattle in the past 5 years. He is spotted cougars (which scare the everliving crap out out of me) a few times, and there is been coyotes in their yard a few times this fall.

We are taking turns keeping watch, we will have a fire going, an airhorn at the ready, and our paintball guns loaded and gassed up at all times. Is their anything we've overlooked? Any other suggestions? We might be borrowing my uncle is coonhounds that he has specifically trained to tree cougars for his job, so that would have all our bases covered. (We hope)
Thankfully we do not have to worry about bear, they'd be hibernating.

As for our paintball guns, a few well placed shot would discourage an attacker.

And if l tied the dogs up regardless of whether or not we were attackedmy uncle would kill us.

Lastly, we are both experienced campers. We know not to leave food anywhere.

We decided to make a jerry-rigged bear fence, and hook it up to my uncles main one. Thanks for the ideas, it is not till February so its still a long ways off.

l think the only things you have overlooked is a real gun and dont tie your dogs up as it will make them fair game for the cougar. Keep a fire going and if a bear comes watch your dogs and if standing in the fire light with the dogs always face the same direction the dogs are because they know exactly where the bear is.If its a grizz, he will yell out just out of view and then circle you so watch them dogs and stand ready with your gun !

Ok as an experienced camper, l can tell u that number one DO NOT leave any food within 100 feet of ur camp site. keep it tied up in a plastic bag & hang it from a tree. 2nd dont tie ur dogs up this will just make them a tempting target for anyting in the woods. if ur dogs cant stay without a leash dont bring them. keeping a fire going will keep most animals away especialy if u use some live pine branches. this will produce alot of smoke & keep the animals away. & if u dont have a shotgun that u can bring l would say bring some pepper spray.

Paintball guns are, essentially, toys, or at least sporting equipment, rather than weapons. Do not rely on one for personal protection, any more than you would rely on a bowling ball for that purpose. (Actually, the bowling ball might work better, if you were strong enough to throw it.)

Find out what is legal in your area, and from that list, bring something you know how to use effectively and safely. Pepper spray might actually be the best choice for you.
