I am a wilderness survival trainer, l was surprised to hear how few people carry a compass with and/or know how to use it or read a map.

Do you carry a compass, know how to use it, can read a map efficiently?

usually because it is in the pack
in the Smokies, l do not always but it depends on which trail
there r some trails that l am familiar with where it is easy to get lost if u get just a few yards off the trail & get slightly disoriented for just a few seconds
if l am in a new area or if it has been awhile since last visit, yes l always carry map, compass, basic survival kit, & l Always make sure someone knows where l am gong, when l will be back, & when to call for someone to coming looking for me

l always have a map and compass when on the trail.

To keep my skills practiced l take an orienteering course or reread one of my map/orienteering books annually.

l usually carry a compass when l go out fishing. l always have one with me when l go hunting. The only time l did not bring one l got lost.

Only if l am going into a real wilderness area.
Do not need one for general hiking trails in well maintained areas with rangers in the area.

what to do when needed, incl. compass use.

Even though l have a Garmin Gs60 l also carry a compass (handed down from my hunter dad) & a map of the area. Back ups r always good to have. And it is always a good idea to orient as to ur position & where u r going before u go into the woods. Have a reasonable knowledge of the terrain. And be able to take that information & relate it to an oriented map. Also keeping yourself aware of ur surroundings, the time of day & the position of the sun r all good ways to ensure ur safe return.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. l also normally carry a GPS. l worry about being able to tell where l am on the map if l were to get lost. The compass does not help much if you do not know where you are. A small GPS unit solves this problem.

That may be overkill, but l normally am responsible for a dozen or more scouts so l like to ''be prepared.''

l always carry both a map & compass whenever l am hiking in a new location. However, l lead hikes at a few places that l know so well l never look at the map or have a need for a compass.

90% of the time when l do use them, l rarely use the compass. If the map is accurate l can normally orient the map on landmarks alone. l only whip out the compass if l need to triangulate or am someplace with no good reference points to orient the map.

l almost never use a GPS. l like one that can give me UTM points as well as Long/Lat. & Altitude. It is nice to know where u are, but the GPS screen maps do not give me the same picture a map does.

l do know how to use it (and read a map), thanks to the Scouts. When l was in Army basic training l helped my squad members in their training on map and compass.

l am also a geologist and work with topo maps almost every day.

carry a couple but l never use them, l like to use the landmarks and terrain to find my way instead, the sun and stars also helpful
