Well at least have ur cell phone in case of emergency (You Can Turn it Off) leave all laptops & ipods & home.

Get a Tent that protects u from the mosquitoes but is very ventilated.

Bring Flint to start a fire.get lots of wood (obviously).

If u want to cook the old fashioned way use an iron skillet that can go over the fire (Even Thought they sell the electric protable stoves, but l do not think u want that)

Bring a Fishing Pole if you're near a Lake.

Lots of Drinking Water & Insect Repellent.

l agree that a cell phone is essential. You can use a windup flashlight or radio with weatherband. l recommend a magnesium firestarter. It works a bit better than flint. Citronella oil in an old hurricane lamp does double duty, as a source of light and as an insect repellant. Place your food in a sack, tie it to a rope and hoist it up at night to keep critters out of it. Fish for your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Bring dry socks.

Depends on what u call low-tech. Be sure wherever u go that open fires r allowed. l would take a tent, coleman stove & light, water proof matches insect repellent(with Deet) Cot & mattress.(snakes love to cuddle under warm bodies)a cot will get u off the ground.Take plenty water & do not forget the Bacon & Eggs, they r the best when camping. Of course take a skillet. Leave the video games, radios & TV at home, Enjoy nature at its best. THATS CAMPING of course my style now is HOLIDAY INN Enjoy

Are u hiking into a back-country area or camping in a campground where u can unload & set up next to ur car? A sleeping bag rated to below the low temp u r expecting. A grill & cooking utensils suitable for fire cooking. Dehydrated non perishable food or a good cooler.
Water. Lots & lots of water. A hatchet for chopping kindling.

A tent of a suitable size. Most Walmart, Kmart, & Target tents r decent quality & reasonable price. Also look on EBay.

Cabela is has some really cool camping gear, more specialized stuff than the big box stores.

When we go camping we bring plenty of bacon. Its probably the best thing to eat when camping. Tortillas r good too because u can wrap up ur eggs bacon & potatos & have a breakfast burrito. You should already have a good idea of ur essentials. Another helpful item is babywipes. These help freshen u up if u get the kind made with aloe they also soothe. Another suggested item is some whiskey. Have to have some. Last year my friend broke his hand while hiking & he survived the rest of the trip due to the whiskey. Magnesium is a little better than flint so I'd agree with that. l would bring a pocket knife, compass & topo map. Most areas have topo maps available online somewhere. l am from southern Arizona, animals r not the worst of our worries here while camping. So we also bring a couple guns for safety. Horse shoes r a good source of entertainment while camping, so r dominoes. Cards can be hard to play sometimes due to wind but dominoes r not affected. Depending upon the population of the area golf balls & clubs r fun too. Tiki torches can be useful as well u can set them around the perimeter of the camp & help eliminate bugs. Make sure to turn off the cell. If u r searching for a signal it will kill the battery very fast.
The best thing to bring though r friends. Camping is always a better experience when shared with good friends.

Have fun.

Do NOT launch ur experience by trying to go backwoods & primitive on ur first try.

Start simple & comfortable. Spend a couple of weekends at some nearby parks.
- Tent - If you're by yourself u can get one of the 7X7 backpacker tents fairly cheap.
- Sleeping bag & pad - Get one that is rated for weather colder than u r ever likely to experience. You can always sleep outside the bag. A decent sleeping pad is nice, do not bother with the cheap inflatables.
- Fire - Check the park rules. Many provide fire rings and/or grill. Do NOT assume u can just build on on the ground anywhere. Some parks outlaw open fires during dry seasons. A campstove is a necessity. Start small with one of the Coleman single burner units.
- Clothing - Loose-fitting, sturdy clothes of cotton & wool. You may be wearing them a few days. If u r not accustomed to going ''commando'' then bring extra underwear. This is no time to start a new fashion statement.
- Shoes - The bestest is only necessary if you're climbing mountains & the like. Never take new shoes or boots. Pack some flip-flops to wear around camp.
- Food - Do not blow a lot of bucks on the dehydrated stuff until u need to . Camp from ur car & pack a cooler. Keep the menu simple. Do not bring anything u can not cook. If u have only ur campstove u will be hungry if all u brought was steak. Dried soups & ramen noodles r handy. Forget the soda pop & bring water for tea & coffee. If u must have the sugary carp then pack some of those powdered mixes u pour into the water bottles. SUGARY STUFF ATTRACTS BEES AND ANTS.
- Utensils - l buy used pots & pans from the thrift store or from the miscellaneous boxes at auctions. If they get scorched it is no big loss. Some plastic spoons & forks in a baggie, spatula, knife, a pair of pliers from the car for hot pans, . & aluminum foil. I've made four-course meals with one pan & some aluminum foil.
- Miscellaneous - Flashlight, lantern, bug repellant, baby wipes, poncho/raingear, bug repellant, first aid kit, trash bags, BUG REPELLANT, towel, toothbrush, bug repellant, toilet paper, handsoap (find a kind u can shampoo with, l like Zest), . & bug repellant. You wo not need a saw or hatchet since hardly any parks anywhere allow u to cut down their trees & brush. Do not use any scented colognes, perfumes, deoderant or shampoos as they attract insects.

Practice with a few weekend trips. Fine tune ur gear. Learn what works & what doesn't. Upgrade where needed. Since most of my camping is a park & drive l am moving up to a bigger tent. The weight is negligible & it will be nice to stand up.
