Do you like stepping in someone dump? l don't. Besides that is not safe for anybody or anything around it. Just think about the dump running into the water and then you bath in it.

The whole point of this is basically conservation. l went on an awesome trip in Colorado my Junior year of high school with a bunch of guys and a pro guide from Mt. Raineer. Our guide made us bury everything too. He said it was so that we do not leave our ''fingerprint'' on the environment. l know it is cheesy, but are not you glad the people before you did not leave any fingerprints? :)

When you're really deep in the woods you need to do it to keep the animals ( Bears mostly), from coming around at night as they can smell your ''human dump'' for miles(especially if you've been eatin' that ''Campfire Chile''), and WILL show up to investigate. This simple rule can save you a lot of heartache and is well worth the effort.

Also, animals do not know any better. People do. It is just common sense and consideration.

When you take your dog out for a walk and they poop.. you're supposed to pick it up and dispose of it instead of leaving it there for someone to step in.

common courtesy for the most part. It also degrades quicker when buried & then there is the smell as noted earlier Wild life is often intrigued by what we bi-peds eat. l have personally experienced this when me & a friend were in the sierra national forest, & he chose to ''mess'' a few dozen yards from his tent, sure enough within a few hours not 1 but 2 different bears came to check it out then decided that they wanted some of whatever he had eaten & rumaged our camp for it. Too bad for the baers that l am not an idiot & had stored the food & scented stuff in a Garcia & had put it a couple hundred yards away. Then there is the ascetics, if a place gets 2000 people a year backpacking or thru-hiking could u imagine if none of them buried waste ? u could go on a hike to see 2000 piles of crap, almost like a day in a city the difference is in the woods the crap does not walk around.

It helps with the smell
Nobody will step in it
you wo not be infringing on some animal is territory
and it will help it decompose better.

Yours is a good question & has actually changed over time by the people that make the ''tread lightly'' rules. Burying was what l was taught but then it was said that waste does not decompose quickly when buried & animals dig it up anyway so it was recommended to burn the tp & smear the mess all over rocks to increase the surface area & allow it to decompose faster. That lasted until an area frequented by river rafters was tested for e. coli & found to be highly contaminated so now the recommended practice is to pack it out in blue bags. I've never seen a blue ziplock bag so l will stick to burying it.
