l got hit with golf ball sized hail in the Black Hills of S. Dakota.
l was camping my way across the country with my girlfriend. It started to hail pea size stuff so l told her we would wait it out under a tree. Short while latter the golf balls started falling! We ran for our little 2 man pup tent as it was too far to go to the car. The storm lasted about 10 minutes & it damn near beat our tent to the ground. We washed the hail off & loaded up the coolers with the stuff. Lasted way better than store bought.

Never while actually in the tent. We were in the middle of the lake fishing out of a canoe. We got into the water to keep most of the hail of us!!

Yep. The good thing with hail is that it normally does not go on for too too long. We've had tornado warnings, high winds, hail, all kinds of stuff over the years.

One trip was really bad - the trees were rocking & rolling. Tornado sirens were going off, & we had a tree branch, about 4'' in diameter & 15' long, land right next to the tent. The weather radio said it was going to keep up thru the afternoon & into the evening with storms, so we just packed up & got out of there as fast as we could. Trees were knocked down on the road out of the campground - it was wild.

Another trip we had 4-5 sites at a state park; the rains came down so hard for such a long time, we all went to a pavillion building in the campground - they had a shelter area / room on the back of the shower building . we just crowded into there for an hour while the storm blew over. It was pretty crazy, & we had a lot of fun, actually.

Number one rule though, is to be careful - listen for lightning, & find adequate shelter if at all possible.

Follow the 30/30 rule:

Any lightning safety plan should incorporate the 30/30 Rule. The 30/30 Rule states that people should seek shelter if the ''Flash-To-Bang'' delay (length of time in seconds between a lightning flash & its subsequent thunder), is 30 seconds or less, & that they remain under cover until 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder.

A 30 second lead time is necessary prior to a storm is arrival because of the possibility of distant strikes. A 30 minute wait after the last thunder is heard is necessary because the trailing storm clouds still carry a lingering charge. This charge can & does occasionally produce lightning on the back edge of a storm, several minutes after the rain has ended.

Studies have shown most people struck by lightning r struck not at the height of a thunderstorm, but before & after the storm has peaked. This shows many people r unaware of how far lightning can strike from its parent thunderstorm. DO NOT wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, & do not leave shelter just because the rain has ended.
