first take some rope or para cord & tie it to 2 trees that r close enough together & still get ur tarp in between. Then take ur tarp & throw it over the rope/cord. There r a number of ways to do this next step, u can take 2 ends of the tarp & tie it close to the ground leaving the other 2 higher off the ground, or take both sides & even them up on both sides. When l do this l usually take one side & put it all the way on the ground & leave the other side further up off the ground, mainly because l have a fire going.

You can get a Heavy painters ground cloth (Plastic sheet) at the hardware store. and like your other answer you can make a shelter. not a tent. l use a light cord heavy string.
At Cabels check in the Cave. l got a really good tent there for 40$. The fly goes to the ground it is a small two person. l usually camp by myself. l am camping tonight at a family gathering. In my brother is back yard. Good luck

1)tie rope or twine between two trees that r relatively close to each other, be sure not to tie it too high up. tie this TIGHTLY & make sure the rope is extremely stiff.
2)Place ur tarp over the rope center-line.
3)attach twine or rope to each grommet on each side to make guy ropes, make sure they r long enough to stretch about 3 or 4 feet!
4) sink stakes into the ground located at the proper angle.
5) tie guy ropes tightly to stakes & place ur sleeping gear underneath!
l actually prefer this to a full tent as it is lighter & easier to pack as well as being a much cheaper option!
take a look at the pictures from a short trip l made last week using this system.

Try this website, they have a PDF free for download with diagrams/pictures on shelter building using tarps:
